High wind, hail and falling debris cause a specific kind of roof damage that looks different from ordinary wear, and insurers know the difference, which is why documentation matters as much as the repair itself. We treat storm damage jobs as two things at once: making the roof safe and weathertight, and building the paper trail you need for a successful claim.

What storm damage usually looks like

  • Multiple tiles or slates missing or cracked in a pattern consistent with wind direction, rather than scattered general wear
  • Lead flashing lifted or torn away from a chimney or valley
  • Guttering torn from its brackets or downpipes pulled away from the wall
  • A ridge line disturbed with mortar or dry ridge fittings dislodged
  • Impact damage from a fallen branch or debris

Storm damage tends to appear in clusters, several slipped tiles on the same slope facing the wind, rather than the single isolated tile you would expect from ordinary wear, and recognising that pattern is part of what separates storm damage from general deterioration when it comes to a claim.

What we do first

Safety first: if the roof is compromised and exposed, we make it weathertight with temporary measures the same day. Then we carry out a full assessment, photographing every point of damage with clear reference to the storm event, since insurers need to see damage that is consistent with a specific weather occurrence rather than general deterioration.

Building your insurance claim evidence

We provide a written report describing the damage found, when the storm occurred, and the repair needed, along with dated photographs. This is the documentation most insurers ask for, and having it ready from the roofer who actually inspected the damage carries more weight than photographs taken from the ground by the homeowner. See our storm damage insurance claims guide for what insurers usually require.

Keeping the receipts and records together

If temporary weatherproofing is carried out before your claim is approved, keep the invoice for that alongside our written report, insurers generally expect to see reasonable steps taken to prevent further damage, and that record supports rather than undermines a later claim.

We also date-stamp our photographs and keep a copy of the report on file, so if an insurer later queries the claim or asks for further evidence, we can supply it again without you having to chase us months down the line.

Excess and policy limits

Whether it makes sense to claim at all depends on your policy excess against the likely repair cost, and that is a decision for you and your insurer, not for us to push either way. We give you the honest figure for the repair so you can make that call with real numbers in front of you.

Repair once approved

Once your claim is assessed, or if you are proceeding without a claim, we carry out the repair to the same standard as any other roof repair, with our 10 year written workmanship guarantee applying regardless of whether the job came through insurance or not.

Same-day response

We prioritise storm damage callouts, particularly where water is actively entering the property. See our emergency roofing page for our hours and response approach.

Trustable quality roofers, a great team

Had a leaky roof that had been problematic for a while. Luke and his team have future proofed, so we should no longer have any problems with it. A lovely, helpful team and when we need work done elsewhere, won't hesitate to give them a call.

Nothing was too much trouble

Had quotes for our very tricky old Victorian cottage. Although all quotes were similar it was Luke's attitude and personality that got the job and we couldn't be happier, nothing was too much trouble and his workers are top drawer.

Worked tirelessly through the heat wave

Luke and his guys are amazing. Very professional, courteous and did a wonderful job of our roof. Left the site clean and tidy, worked tirelessly through the heat wave, and we are very happy with the price. 10 out of 10 for Swift.

Questions

Straight answers before you book

Will my insurance cover storm damage?

Usually, yes, storm and wind damage is covered by most standard buildings insurance policies, unlike general wear and tear. Our storm damage insurance claims guide explains what most insurers look for.

How much does storm damage repair cost?

It depends entirely on the extent of the damage. A handful of dislodged tiles is a small repair, £150 to £300, while widespread damage after a serious storm can run into the thousands. We give you a written fixed price after assessment.

How can you tell a dodgy roofer after a storm?

Storm chasers cold-calling door to door straight after severe weather are a well known problem. A legitimate local roofer with a fixed address and a track record, checked against our guide to spotting a dodgy roofer, is the safer route.

How quickly can you assess storm damage?

Same day for genuine urgent cases called within our hours, 8am to 6pm, seven days a week. Call 01945 897430.

What evidence do insurers need?

Usually dated photographs of the damage, a written description linking it to the storm event, and a repair quote or invoice. We provide all of this as standard on storm damage jobs.

Will you repair the roof before my claim is approved?

We can make it safe and weathertight immediately if needed, and carry out the full repair either once your claim is approved or straight away if you choose to proceed without waiting.

Do you cover my area?

Yes, across Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, west Suffolk and south Lincolnshire. Call 01945 897430.
