GRP, glass reinforced plastic, is laid as a liquid resin over a fibreglass matting reinforcement and cures into a single seamless surface with no joints for water to find its way through, which makes it one of the most reliable flat roofing systems available, particularly on roofs with a lot of detailing.

How it is installed
The existing roof deck is inspected and any rot or damage repaired first, since GRP is only as good as the deck underneath it. A layer of fibreglass matting is laid and saturated with resin, built up in layers to the correct thickness, with all upstands, edge trims and roof penetrations properly detailed as the resin is applied, not sealed afterward as an afterthought. Once cured it forms one continuous waterproof membrane across the entire roof.
Weather conditions matter during installation, resin needs the right temperature and dry conditions to cure correctly, which is why we plan GRP work around a suitable weather window rather than rush it in unsuitable conditions just to keep to a schedule.
Getting the fall right
Like any flat roof, GRP needs a slight fall built into the deck so water runs off toward a drainage point rather than sitting on the surface. This has to be planned before the GRP goes on, not corrected afterward, and it is the single biggest factor in whether a flat roof performs well for its full lifespan or fails early.

GRP or EPDM

If your roof shape has more than a couple of upstands, a rooflight or an awkward junction against a wall, GRP is usually the material we recommend first, purely because of how well it forms into those details as a liquid rather than a sheet.
Once cured, a GRP roof is inspected for full coverage and thickness before we sign it off, checking the resin has properly saturated the matting throughout rather than leaving any dry patches that would weaken the finished surface.
Colour and top coat
The final top coat gives GRP its colour and UV resistance, and is applied once the structural fibreglass layers beneath have cured. Grey and brown are the most common colours chosen to blend with surrounding tile or brickwork, though other colours are available where a particular finish is wanted.
The top coat also needs periodic renewal on very old GRP roofs, well beyond the structural life of the fibreglass itself, and we can advise whether your roof needs a fresh top coat or genuinely needs replacing.
